The Locked in the Basement session where recorded in my basement using an iMac and Pro Tools 8 in the month of Febuary 2010.
While working on a few of these solo guitar arrangements one of my earliest mentor was in my thoughts, Dawes Thompson from Trenton NJ. When I was a kid, and didn't know D Minor 7 from my elbow… I felt like I just couldn't understand how these chord changes works and how to improvise. Dawes was always very supportive and explains to me. “Listen to the bass player, kid and stop playing all those notes... you don't get paid by the note. Just listen and keep it simple...” Well it has taken almost 30 years to finally understand Dawes advice. The last time I spoke to Dawes he asked me, "So kid, what guitar ya playing?" I told I am playing a PRS Hollow body II. It didn't mean a thing to Dawes if it wasn’t a Gibson L5 or Super400 or one of those big sounding guitar.
I miss Dawes… I would have liked to have showed him a few of these tunes. Dawes the Jazz Musicologist I imagined would have pointed me to a Lonnie Johnson, or some other great master guitarist soloist or a Bix solo for ideas. There where many years from my teen into professional musician hood and back to earth... I wish I could had just pick Dawes musically brain a bit more. So... enclosed is my version of St. James Infirmary by Jim Primose. I play it the way I hear it, but most of all the way I felt it. I dedicate this session, warts and all, to Master guitarist Dawes Thompson. God knows, if I got paid by the notes I would be a very wealthy man indeed.
